Common Questions
Do I need a referral to see Dr. Sundaram?
Yes. Dr. Sundaram is a specialist ophthalmologist and, in BC, ophthalmology consultations require a referral from a family physician (GP) or optometrist. If you have an eye concern, see your family doctor or optometrist first and ask them to send a referral to our clinic. Once we receive your referral, we will contact you to schedule your consultation. Walk-in appointments are not available.
How long is the wait time for a new patient appointment?
Wait times depend on the urgency of your referral and the nature of your condition. Urgent referrals — for sudden vision loss, suspected retinal detachment, or acute angle-closure glaucoma — are triaged and seen as quickly as possible, often within days. Routine referrals for cataract assessment or stable conditions typically involve a longer wait. We aim to triage all referrals within two business days of receipt and contact patients promptly.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Please bring: your current eyeglasses and/or contact lenses; a complete list of your medications (including eye drops and over-the-counter medications); your BC Care Card (CareCard/BC Services Card); any previous eye examination reports, imaging, or specialist letters; and a list of questions for Dr. Sundaram. For most eye examinations, your eyes will be dilated, so your vision will be blurry for 2–4 hours. Please arrange for someone to drive you home if possible.
Is parking available at the clinic?
Parking availability will be confirmed once clinic locations are finalised. Both the Abbotsford and Chilliwack locations will be chosen with patient accessibility in mind. Updated parking and access information will be added to this page and provided in your appointment confirmation letter.
Do you bill MSP directly?
Yes. Dr. Sundaram's practice bills BC MSP directly for all MSP-covered services. Patients do not pay out of pocket for medically insured consultations, cataract surgery, glaucoma management visits, or other MSP-covered procedures. For any additional services that are not MSP-covered — such as premium intraocular lens upgrades or cosmetic procedures — you will be informed of any fees in advance, in writing, before proceeding.
